But that seems to be true of everything else in my life as well. So, we left off with November and what we were planning for Thanksgiving. We went to my Mom's for that. We headed over on Thursday and took the dog with us. We stayed at a hotel as mom had a house full. My aunt & uncle with their dog staying in the RV parked in the front yard. My sister managed to get the time off and was there. My cousin and her husband came from Lake County. My brother and his wife from Colorado. And the neighbor from across the street. A house full for dinner and mom didn't do any of the cooking. My cousin's husband and my sister-in-law did most of the dinner. My sister and sister-in-law did all the baking for the desserts. My uncle helped with the last minute cooking for the dinner.

December was quiet. Hubby and I spent Christmas together very quietly. We got each other one thing for a gift and just enjoyed our time. We were supposed to have company, but they called saying they had a nasty set of germs and, bless them, didn't want to share. We both slept through the New Year coming in.

January, I made a quilt for my aunt to give to my cousin who was expecting her first child in March. My aunt had asked me in November if I would be willing to make the quilt and I said, sure. I finished it the end of January.

My Aunt was thrilled with the way the quilt came out and I was glad to be able to give it to her in February when I went over to my mom's for the baby shower.

February saw lots and lots and lots of rain and a lot of flooding in my neck of the country. Where I had traveled the weekend of the baby shower, a week later was under water, roads closed. I managed to get to work but some days it was a bit of a challenge.

I got another quilt done in February, but haven't taken a picture of it yet, so that will have to wait.

March was coming quickly and I still needed to finish my Red Bluff block of the month top. I managed to get the top done in early February and sandwiched in late February. Then it was a rush to get the quilting done so I could take it finished to the Show and Tell meeting March 21. I made it! Finished sewing the binding down March 19. This was at the
show and tell night. I love the way it turned out and now I'm
into April and I plan to finish another quilt. So stay tuned, there's more to come.

My cousin had her baby in March, a little girl. All are doing well and they are totally enjoying their bundle of joy.
I really should be doing better. Let's see, I left off in July having gotten back from my trip to Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Now I have to think about what I've done and where I've been.

August. Well, I didn't go very far that month. Went to Chester for the quilt show there, spent the weekend at our cabin. Then the following weekend was the quilt show in Paradise. Then a weekend at the cabin followed by a weekend visiting my mom and the quilt show in Laytonville. I had to work during the week, so not much else going on.

September brought a 3 day weekend at our cabin and then hunting season. We were not lucky enough to bring home meat for the freezer. Maybe next year. I took a 4 day weekend to drive to Sebastopol for the revelation of the 2017 Grand Offers for the Grand Chapter of California, Order of the Eastern Star. That was a fantastic experience and one I would do again. Parking was a bit of a challenge, but we made it.

October brought some cooler temperatures, but still a few too warm days for me as well. I went to Grand Chapter in Visalia and had a marvelous time meeting up with my friends. I've almost finished my block of the month from Red Bluff - the last month is November. Have to wait and see if I can make it then.

November brings installations of officers in the Eastern Star Chapters around the state. My goal this year was to attend 6. I only got to 5 of them. I was too tired to do the one I missed. I decided I didn't want to fall asleep while driving. I will not be doing much else this month. Thanksgiving is around the corner and I need to think about what we will do for that.

I did get to the last meeting for my Red Bluff block of the month. I got all 10 months patterns and fabric for the original $5 I plunked down to join. I need to make up the 10th month and then put the quilt top together as we have a meeting in March to show off our quilts or tops. Guess it will depend on how well I do in getting it together and finished.

Till next time.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-46676556750198864202016-07-17T14:12:00.000-07:002016-07-17T14:12:40.327-07:00July better than half goneIt's hard to believe that July is better than half gone. Where does the time go? I have been so busy that I've not had time to even think of where it's gone.

June was a good month for me. No headaches, although I didn't get to go on a trip to Idaho with a girlfriend as her family obligations kept her from going. But in good vacation style, I got relaxed and got a few things done. I took a quilt class and that quilt is finished. Do I have a picture to put up? Not yet. Oh, and I took another class in May and that project is finished. It wasn't a quilt and no, I don't have a picture yet. Guess that means I should get out the camera and take care of it.

July started off too hot for me. I am NOT a fan of anything over 90 degrees and of course we've had several over that mark. I spent the 4th of July weekend at our cabin with my husband and friends. Great time was had by all. Then I ventured to Oregon to see the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. My drive was spent with the wipers going a good part of the drive up. Some of the rain was torrential in nature. Yes, we need it and while I'm glad we got it, it could have skipped raining on the roadway and stuck to the fields and trees.

I will get some pictures up on the next posting as right now I need to finish my laundry and get myself another cold drink. Hot weather is NOT my friend and I stay well hydrated all year long. However, somehow I seem to want more in the hot weather.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-70701335687098539682016-04-23T21:33:00.000-07:002016-04-23T21:33:15.238-07:00March FinishesI finished a couple of quilts in March, but couldn't show them until now as they were wedding gifts to my cousin and her new husband. They have seen the quilts and are thrilled with them. Now I can show them to you.

The one on the left with the horses is for my cousin Leia. She owns a miniature horse and a mustang. She's been around horses all her life and loves them. The backing on her quilt is another horse print that reminds one of Christmas. And she is thrilled with this as the backing is fabric that she loves. This will be a well used lap quilt.

The second quilt is a winery print quilt for her husband who works for a winery. I wasn't sure what to make his quilt with, but I have it on good authority he is pleased with it. His has the green that's the border on the front as the backing. Both quilts were given to them with lots of love and with washing instructions. They have been washed once, but we all know that fabrics can run when we least expect them to.

The good feeling that came from watching them open the package with the two quilts was

well work the work that went into them. The expressions on their faces when the opened them said it all. The amazement on their faces was priceless when they realized that the package contained not one, but two, lap quilts.

I feel like I made points for being a good cousin in coming up with something they would like. Not meeting her husband to be before the wedding, I had no idea what he might like. I just took a leap of faith when planning the second quilt.

I can now go back to my list of UFO projects and get some more done. They can be shown once I get them finished as so far they are not on a "surprise gift" list.
I finally took a picture of the last quilt I finished in December 2015. It's a winter wall hanging and I'm happy with it. I bought the kit at a quilt show somewhere and I can't tell

you the place or the year. The kit had all the fabric and yarn for the scarf and the snowman's hat, along with the backing and the binding. Another quilt that was purchased when I was first learning to quilt that got on the procrastination listing. I started putting it together in 2011, but didn't get finished until December 2015. I put the last stitches into the binding December 31st and the label.

My 2016 quilting year is starting off with finishing a couple of quilt tops, getting some binding ready for quilts that are in line for quilting, and finishing a table runner made from blocks I won at our February quilt guild meeting. I won the 6 heart blocks

seen in this design along with the center square and the 2 triangles of fabric to put it together. I went to the quilt shop the fabrics had come from and purchased enough of the darker purple to use as the backing and the binding. I got it sandwiched the third week of February and did most of the quilting at my small quilt group meeting. Finished the balance of the quilting at home and then put the binding on it. It's the first finish for 2016 and I'm pleased with it.

I will be working on getting more of my projects finished as time goes by. I want to do what I did last year as a challenge to myself. I want to get as many of my long standing UFOs done as I can AND I want to finish everything I start in 2016. I'm off to an okay start as the table runner is one of those starts. There are 4 others on the 2016 list and one of them will be finished next month. One is a block of the month and ends in November, so I'm hoping to get it done the first part of December. Will see how that works out. Another one on the list will most likely be finished in May. The last one on the list is a work in progress as it is hand stitched and I can only work on it for short periods of time.

Thanks for checking in.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-87501166293852587942016-01-22T22:50:00.003-08:002016-01-22T22:50:40.742-08:00A great end to an old yearIt takes me a while sometimes to decide what I want to put on my blog. I finally decided to put those things that finished the year 2015. In November, my father-in-law passed away. He was 93 and wanted to to be released from his earthly life. We are sad that he passed away, but remind ourselves that at 93 he had lived a good life.

The other thing that happened in November is that a quilt friend helped me to sandwich 3 of my quilts that have been around waiting for a while. I am thrilled to say that all 3 got quilted, bound, and labeled before the end of 2015. One was a quilt for a friend's #2 granddaughter, the #1 granddaughter already has hers.

This is the quilt for #2 granddaughter. The picture is not the best, but hey, it's the only one I have of the quilt. I spent more time deciding what I was going to put on the back of the quilt than I did in stitching the top together. And then there's the time procrastinating putting the back together once I decided on it. However, I managed to finish the quilt Thanksgiving Day and it was boxed and wrapped that weekend. I got it our friend's house before Christmas. Don't know if it has gotten to it's intended person or not. Haven't talked with the friend to find out.

The second one I got done was one I had taken a class to learn how to do back in 2005. I got the top done probably in 2007 or maybe 2008. But didn't get the backing together until 2015. Are you seeing a pattern? I am. Anyway, I love the way it turned out and it feels wonderful to say it's done!

It came from a book about Mariner's Compasses. Don't know that I would do another one anytime soon.

This was another one of those, gee, maybe I should finish it. I'm thrilled with the way it turned out and while it's done, I don't know where it will hang.

The third one that my quilt friend helped me sandwich was finished December 31, 2015 and I don't yet have a picture of it. It was a kit that I purchased at some quilt show, somewhere, in some year. I bought it because I fell in love with the quilt and the kit included everything to make it except the thread and the batting. Yes, it included the backing and the binding. The price was reasonable and the kit could be from 2003 as that's the copyright on the pattern or it could be as late as 2010 as I started it in 2011. I will get a picture of it and post it here.

But with those three finishes off my UFO list, I succeeded in doing what I wanted to do for the 2015 year. I got more than 12 things finished, completed several from parts to tops, and finished everything I started in 2015. I am so pleased with the success in 2015, that I'm doing the same in 2016. I will finish more than I start, make complete tops out of more that are still mostly in parts, and I will finish everything I start in 2016.

I am off to a good start. I have only started one quilt and have only the borders left to put on it and then can find backing fabric and finish it. I have one more that only needs borders and I intend to get those on before the end of the month. Till then, Happy New Year.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-21185896369169832482015-06-14T21:34:00.000-07:002015-06-14T21:37:56.509-07:00Flag DayToday was Flag Day. A day to recognize our Flag. A symbol of our country. Long may she wave. She stands for our freedom, our country, our countrymen and countrywomen who serve to protect our country. Did your flag fly high and proud today? Did you even think about what that flag means? Or did you just put her up because you thought you should?

My flag stands for freedom and for my country. She waves proudly. She's a gracious old lady and deserves our respect. When I see her go by, I put my hand over my heart in salute to her. She never touches the ground. She comes down at sunset because I have no light to shine on her at night. She never gets rained on because she'd not an all weather flag. Are you?Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-13767960623311180332015-06-13T19:13:00.002-07:002015-06-13T19:14:27.135-07:00Hot JuneYep, the month of June is starting off way too hot for me. I don't like it above 90 and already we've hit the 100+ several times. I try picturing myself in a nice cool place, but still it doesn't work. My air conditioner is working, but not as efficiently as I would like. I'm lucky if it keeps the house 15-20 degrees cooler than outside. Thank heavens I have a small window air conditioner in the bedroom that I use when I sleep at night.

Since my last post, I've done a lot of things. I went on a quilt shop hop in April with a friend. I stayed within my budget. Boy was I happy about that. We saw some gorgeous fabrics and some fantastic quilts. I picked up a few books and patterns, but very little fabric. Everything came home in the same tote bag as the binder that collected the free patterns from each shop.

In May, I went to visit my Mom for Mother's Day. We had a fantastic time. We went out for dinner and we talked about all kinds of different subjects. Going to have to do it again - we had so much fun. I also took a workshop through my local quilt guild. I think I have a picture of that quilt. Not the best of pictures, but it will give you an idea.

It is currently sandwiched and awaiting quilting. I hope to get started on that soon. However, I have a couple of other projects that need to be done first. I have a couple of place mats to make up for my quilt guild and the president's block. I have made 8 of the place mats for our community service committee and plan to make at least 4 more. They are simple and I can whip one up in an afternoon. I even haven a couple of those pictures which I'll include in this posting.

These are fun little place mats to make and while the colors are not ones I would choose, they do make for fun little projects. I would love to make a matched set but I have to figure out that would work. Maybe I'll just have to try it some day. Would have to pull my fabric scraps and see what I get. So here are are couple more for you to look at.

This one has a bit more pizazz, I think, than the previous one. I'd like to make a few more like it, but the kits come from our community service and they don't always have any two alike.

This one seems to be red. It stands out like the colorful one, yet the blue one above has good points too. I have some scraps here at home that may very well end up in this pattern.

I'm off to find a cool spot under the air conditioner. Will write more later.
The north wind is challenging the allergies and the trees are waving in the breezy air.

Yesterday a friend & I went on a small 3 shop shop hop. Yes, that sentence is correct. We decided to do what 3 of our local area quilt shops call the Bunny Shop Hop. Clever, Easter is next month. The object was to visit each of 3 shops, pick up bunny parts and then in the 3rd shop, put the bunny together. Silly us, we thought we got to keep them. Nope, the bunnies stayed at the 3rd shop we visited. However, I did remember to take pictures of our bunnies. So for your enjoyment, here they are. I was hoping they would go
Okay. Let's see what I can do. Never mind, I guess this is as good as I'm going to get.

They stayed at the quilt shop and we of course came home with patterns and fabric purchased. I bought one pattern and two panels. My friend's bunny is the right hand one. She bought several patterns, a book, and several pieces of fabric. Both bunnies have a bright pink tail. We left them sitting in a basket with 3 other bunnies. As we left, it looked liked they would by joined by a couple more bunnies. Once our bunnies were completed we put our name and phone number on the ticket that had come in one of the parts bags and placed it in the container with the others. We're hoping to win the prize which is a basket full of quilting goodies. Don't know when the drawing is, but I'm sure we'll know the winner by the end of the week.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-5350403923958993542015-02-28T18:43:00.000-08:002015-02-28T18:43:36.522-08:00Project completedI have completed something this weekend that I started last weekend. It's a quilted bag.

I found the kit in my catch all room when looking for two of my "missing" projects. I can say that while I found one, the other is still on the missing list. Don't have a clue where it is. I suspect some day I'll come across it and go "so that's where it was!".

This bag is from a kit that I purchased many, many years ago from Better Homes & Gardens Club that I belonged to. I had not remembered I purchased this kit - that's how long ago it was. But I thought, what the heck, I'm going to make it up. One can never have too many bags to use. This one is 14"x12"x4" and is now ready for use.
I have to say, if I make it again, I will not be following their instructions. The way that the bag went together was a nightmare to quilt later. However, I really like the pattern and will most likely make it again - My Way.

The month of February is almost over and the month of March is creeping up on us. While I like the month of February, I don't seem to get much done. Is that because it's shorter than the other months? Or is it because I just don't pull myself together? Oh, well. I will try to do better in March. I have many things on my UFO list that I want to finish and I'd best be getting to them. A couple of them won't take long, and a couple of them will be works in progress for a while longer.

This month I did find backing for a quilt top I did a year ago. Now I need to cut batting for it and piece the back so that I can hopefully get it sandwiched at our next small quilt group meeting. Once I get them sandwiched, it's just a matter of a couple of weekends to get them quilted.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-58871100963514279042015-01-25T20:23:00.000-08:002015-01-25T20:23:16.447-08:00UFO ProgressI'm making progress this month on my UFO list - for those who don't know, UFO is UnFinished Objects. I have managed to get a total of 3 tops finished - one of those is sandwiched and ready to quilt - and the other 2 are awaiting backing fabric. Although one of them does have it already, I just haven't pieced it. I have 2 more tops that are awaiting border auditions. Yes, you read that right. I have to "test" fabrics for the border. What might make sense color wise, doesn't always match. Just because I thought it might, doesn't mean it will. I took two tops to my small quilt group on Thursday and got some opinions. One of which I threw right out because it doesn't work for me on that quilt. The one that worked is now a completed top and waiting for me to decide on backing fabric.
I put together another UFO set of blocks this afternoon and while I have enough fabric left to do border(s) on it, they just don't do anything for the quilt or for me. I'm going to try something different with it and see if it works. It may also be going out on auditions.
I've set up a luncheon date with a friend for this coming Saturday. She used to work with me, but she retired in November and I'm anxious to see her again. We are going to have a nice lunch and then go visit the quilt store and see if we can find a border for a quilt or two.

Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-57534545960456467672015-01-10T18:49:00.000-08:002015-01-10T18:49:08.465-08:00Checking inHello! I thought I'd check in and let you know what I'm working on. Last weekend I had a very lovely 4 day weekend and I got some stuff done. I finished 2 quilt tops and the smaller of the two now has backing fabric and batting with it and will be sandwiched at some point this month. The other quilt top is one that I started in 2010 when a friend & I took a class at Cloth Carousel in Winters. I have the backing fabric for it, but I need to piece it before I worry about cutting the batting. I got started on another top doing the sashing on it. That one got the rest of the sashing done today. Now I'm going to audition border fabric before it is a true quilt top.

The weather last weekend was way too cold for me to work in the yard. Today, however, was in the 50-55 degree bracket and it felt good to be outside working for a bit of the afternoon. The majority of the leaves in the front yard are now in the yard waste bin waiting to be picked up on Monday. Bad news is that now the front yard looks like it needs mowing and weeding. Oh, well, maybe another day since it's now dark outside.

Had a rough week at work this past one and I'm hoping that this coming one will be better. Hope so - don't know that I want to tackle two bad weeks one right after the other. I'm keeping my mental fingers crossed since I can't work with them physically crossed.

Off to work on some more of my UFO projects and maybe see if I can find some border fabric for the one I just finished the sashing. Or maybe I'll work on another UFO. I have enough that I can pick and choose right now. Or maybe I'll find a good book and read for a while. Later!Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-82885440010341333902015-01-02T11:12:00.002-08:002015-01-02T11:12:54.254-08:00Happy New YearOkay! We've survived the New Year coming in - I was in bed asleep when it clicked over to 2015. My eyelids just couldn't stay up any longer. Besides, it's hard to party with just myself.

I've challenged myself this year on my UFO listing. I'm going to attempt to finish more than I start and make those that are not yet tops, into tops. Of course, this means I need to get busy. I am already into the second day of the new year and haven't done a darn thing off that list.

I'm going to attempt to be better at entering paragraphs on my blog. Lands only knows last year I wasn't so good at that. Maybe we'll be looking at the weather, the work issues, my Eastern Star travels, my vacations (once they are over). Hard to say. This weekend I actually have a 4 day weekend, Jan. 1-4, to work on things. So, first comes the blog entry which you are reading. Then will come my lunch as I'm hungry. Then with luck, I can find a UFO that interests me enough to work on.

Off to lunch. I may or may not be back today. The sun is shining and I have things to do.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-42733865048267535042014-12-28T18:26:00.000-08:002014-12-28T18:26:11.791-08:00Another Quilt FinishI didn't think I could another one done in 2014 - but I did and here it is. You can ignore the clothes line - it was the only place I could hang it to get a decent picture.

I bought this kit at a quilt show in either 2007 or 2008 as the selvage on the border fabric is dated 2007. I fell in love with it as the shop owner had it hanging in her booth. It drew me because of the vibrant colors of the dancers' dresses. I still love it! Don't have a clue where it will hang, but I'm sure to find a spot.

It started as a panel and the fabrics in between the bottom three was cut separately. The more I see it, the more I love it.

Having been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, this has a place in my heart and my memories of having been there. New Orleans during Mardi Gras is a wild and crazy place. I don't know that I would go again at that time of year, but it was well worth experiencing.

Now I am sure that I won't finish another one this year, but I'm already planning on which one will be next in line to finish in 2015. My list of UFO's has been shortened this 2014 year by 6. I'm starting the 2015 year with 6 less than I started the 2014 year. My goal for 2015 is to do the same. Finish more than I start - it may or may not work. Will have to give it my best shot. Progress will be posted.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-12036583890438976522014-12-21T20:47:00.001-08:002014-12-21T20:47:47.206-08:00Christmas is comingAnd I'm not ready yet! I always say I'm going to do better, but here I am still frantically working at the last minute to get everything done. Maybe next year?

I do have a couple of pictures of quilts to show off. I finally finished the last of the 2013 Patch Ability monthly minis. It's called "Hang My Stocking" and I really like the way it came out.

It has buttons for ornaments and the holly berries. The little wall hanging is 6"x24" and really shouldn't have taken me as long as it did. You've heard the saying, life gets in the way - well, that's exactly what happened with this little one. Between work and my Eastern Star duties, I was way too busy to work on quilt projects.

Now I still have work and I still attend Eastern Star meetings. However I don't have a lot of work to do with Eastern Star this year, so I will have more time to work on projects.

The other little quilt project I finished was one for my local quilt guild. It's a challenge quilt. We were invited to participate and for $1 we purchased the directions, rules if you will, and received two fabrics. One was a letter, the other a black and white print. The rules were simple. The quilt was to be 24"x24" - no bigger, no smaller. It had to include the letter and the black & white fabric.
This little wall hanging, #30, was my entry. I got the letter "O" and the black & white swirly fabric next to the building with the red door. For those of you without imaginations, the building with the red door is the "outhouse", the brown with porch is the cabin. The blue is a night sky with a couple of ghosts quilted in, along with a space ship. The story behind it is a trip I took to Alaska when my cousins children were quite young. We flew in by float plane to a Forest Service cabin for a 2 night stay. The outhouse was about 200 ft away from the cabin along a wooden walkway. The young children were scared at night to go down that walkway because there might be something out there to get them. While I didn't win a ribbon for entering, I felt better about my choice when I saw some of the others.

These are the last two finishes from UFO listing for the 2014 year. Hopefully, I will get more done next year and you will have some more quilts to look at in 2015.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-43289621087382150252014-12-07T11:44:00.000-08:002014-12-07T11:45:29.482-08:00Update on lifeOkay, I admit I've not been very diligent at keeping my blog up to date. It happens when one has a busy lifestyle.

I'm now done with year as Deputy Grand Matron for my district in Eastern Star. I've signed on to be one of the star points for my local chapter and this means I should have more time to do the things I want to do.

Since my last posting in July, I've been on a quilt retreat with friends (August), been to a celebration with Eastern Star Friends in September, and been to Grand Chapter is October. November was full of installations and then we had Thanksgiving. now we're in December. No, I'm not done with my shopping nor am I even close. I'm very good at procrastinating!

I hope to get more of my quilting projects done this year. I finished one the end of November, but don't have a photo yet. My goal is to finish at least one more by the end of December and then I will post pictures of them.

We just recently upgraded our internet, so hopefully things will be quicker. Have to play for a while and see what happens.

Later, and if I don't get back before Christmas, please have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-76145615068168257402014-07-20T17:09:00.001-07:002014-07-20T17:09:59.194-07:00A Long time comingWow! Just realized that it's been a couple of months since I wrote on my blog. Guess I've been busy. I've had my work, Eastern Star Meetings, quilt guild meetings, quilt shows and a trip to Oregon for the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Yep, I have been busy and out and about seeing the countryside.

I do have a finish to report. I finally, yes, finally, finished a counted cross stitch project that I've had in progress for almost 6 years. It started as a stitch-a-long with Kustom Krafts and I think I'm the last one to finish. Don't know that for sure, but will post on their Yahoo group after I'm done here. It's gorgeous and while it's not yet framed, I thought I would share with you my readers. So, here's a picture of Raja, a Siberian Tiger.

It has taken me a long time to get him finished. I put in over 350 hours in stitching time as he is 18x14 inches in size and every last inch of that is cross stitched. There is no outlining, no half stitches. There is not one piece of white or ivory in this. The white looking part is a very light tan or a very light yellow. I hope to be able to frame him before December, but I'm not counting on it with all the other projects I need to finish.

Not only did I finish this project, I did it while I was on vacation in Oregon. The other thing I did was a quilt top project with my cousin. The project for that day was a jelly roll race. For those not in the quilting world a jelly roll is 40 pieces of fabric, 2 1/2 inches wide, rolled up, usually from a fabric company's line of fabric. Usually a line will have 30-40 different fabrics depending on the manufacturer. Mine is made from strips that were donated into my stash.

The border is from my cousin's stash. I'm not sure yet how I will quilt it, but since I still have to find the backing for it, I reckon I have time to decide.

My friend Jill, who was on vacation with me in Oregon, also made one. Hers was with bright batiks and came out looking way different. Can't share that as I don't have a photo of it.

Well, now that I've shared a couple of things and updated my blog, I'm off to work on the quilt that I sandwiched earlier today. I figure it's time to get another UFO off the list.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-41310993709358200972014-04-26T08:28:00.003-07:002014-04-26T08:28:25.292-07:00Vision ChallengesYes, you read right - this is about vision challenges. Those who know me, know I've been wearing glasses for nearsightedness for years, eons, if you will. That has changed this month. For the month of April, also my birthday month, I treated myself to having my cataracts removed and lens implants put in. I chose to have distance sight and now I have that. I can see that stuff in the distance, but the challenge now is to work with close things. I have already bought my first pair of "reading glasses" in order to read the numbers on the invoices at work. I suspect I'll have to have another pair to do my handwork with. Haven't tried any of that yet, so will have to wait and see.
The eyes are doing well and so am I. I love the new challenges that come with better eyesight. I have to wear the reading glasses to work on filing a broken fingernail. If I want to read the label on the vitamin bottle, if I want to know how much sodium is in a prepared food, I have to wear the reading glasses. Have a feeling that taking pictures with my digital camera will also change. Am going to a quilt show today and will find out. When I was debating whether to do now or wait, I had lots of folks tell me "piece of cake", "easy surgery, I went out for breakfast after", "what! you're letting someone do surgery on your eyes?", "I had mine done a month ago and things are still blurry". I'm sure you've all heard similar when you made decisions that others thought were crazy.
I feel it's one of the best decisions I've made and while in years down the road I may still have wear glasses, they won't be near the heavy duty prescription as in years past. If you get told you need to have cataracts removed, go for it. Your vision will thank you.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-23770453064559931242014-03-01T23:05:00.000-08:002014-03-01T23:06:32.429-08:00More Quilt FinishesYes, I did it! I actually did what I set out to do. I got 9 little wall hanging quilts sandwiched in January and finished them by February 28th. I'm feeling pretty good about that and I'm going to share the quilts in their finished picture groups. All of these are Patch Ability patterns and 8 of them are from the 2013 series. The ninth is just one I really like. So, you've already seen the January, February, and March ones. So we progress onto April, May, and June.

These are from left to right -
April 2013, called April Showers.
May 2013, called Windy Day.
June 2013, called Bloomin' Butterfly.
All were made with various scraps from my "catch all/sewing room". They are small, 6"x22", so they don't take much to do. Some have buttons, some don't.

Next are June 2013 - Beach Balls
July 2013 - Watermelon Time
and
August 2013- Favorite Fall Decor

Yes, I know August is still part of summer, but I didn't give the pattern the name.

And the last three are as much fun as the first six were. Picking the fabrics for these was a challenge in some cases. Didn't want to use just any old combination.

Here we have October 2013 - Stack O' Jack-o-lanterns
November 2013 - Turkey Perch
and the 9th one is called Quilt Like Crazy and it will be hung in my sewing room.

My husband found me a license plate holder for my car that says "I'd rather be Quilting". It seems to fit. I enjoy quilting and you get to enjoy seeing what I've done.

Tomorrow I start quilting another one from my list of UFOs in the hopes of finishing at least one more more by the end of March. So far I've finished 10 since January 1st and I'm going to try and keep going. I have a bunch of tops that I need to find backing for and I have several that I have the backing and need to sandwich and then quilt. I've set a goal to finish more than I start this year and so far I'm sticking to it. But, we're only 2 months into the year, so that could change.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-68855624728665007032014-02-16T12:38:00.000-08:002014-02-16T12:38:04.075-08:00Mystery Quilt TopOkay, I got the top finished last weekend and then I had to find someone tall to hold it up so I could take a picture. I really like the way it turned out - specially since I just pulled 3 fabrics I thought would go together that happened to have the correct amount of yardage to do so. So here's the top.

I still have to decide what fabric to put on the back. I'm sure I can find something in my stash - but I have a bunch of little wall hanging quilts sandwiched that I need to finish first. Really should not have started a new quilt, but it intrigued me when the directions said the top could be made in a day. Problem was I got started late, decided to preshrink the green and pink, then got involved in the Super Bowl Game.

However, it's now in line for sandwiching and finishing. Course, it's at the bottom of the list, but at least it's in line.

I'm off to work on those wall hangings this afternoon. I've gotten the oil checked in the car, the breakfast dishes done, and put out the recycle bin for pickup tomorrow morning.

Hope your Sunday is going well. Mine has sunshine outside and I'm totally relaxing inside. Till next time!Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-82104459872546794922014-02-02T19:20:00.000-08:002014-02-02T19:20:00.206-08:00Super Bowl SundayOkay, I admit I watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Didn't think a lot of them this year. They just did not have the pizazz I expect for the money they paid to run them.

Now I have to wonder where all those Denver Bronco fan friends of mine are. They are mighty quiet tonight. Did they all miss the game and just don't know they lost yet? Are they hiding under their desk, table, bed in shame for pre-bragging? While I have to admit I'm surprised that Seattle Seahawks won, I have to cheer as I am a native Seattle Woman. Yep, I was born there - don't live there anymore. And my team didn't make it into the Super Bowl, so I decided to root for my birth town. Not the best reason, but the only one I could think of.

While watching the game, I participated in a Mystery Quilt that was out on line. Parts only available today. I saved them all and I have the pieces cut to start putting together. Should be able to get the top together this next week if all goes well. Then next week I'll post a picture of the quilt top.

Okay, I'm off to grab some dinner and finish a book.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-4037886960075419762014-01-26T18:03:00.002-08:002014-01-26T18:03:58.754-08:00A New Year, a new quilt finishYes, it's a bit past the New Year's celebration, but I'm going to celebrate anyway! I've been busy working on getting quilting things done at my house. I currently have one finish to share. It's going to the Community Service Wall at my local quilt guild. The fabric kit was donated to the guild and I made it up. Even did the quilting myself. I admit the colors are not me, but they do work well.

In order to take a picture of it, I went outside and hung it on the clothes line. Yes, I should have done the yard work first, but I didn't want to miss the sunlight outside. Each square has a "flower" quilted into it. This picture really does not do it justice, but then most things look better than their picture.
I will do the pattern again some day using different colors. But since I'm trying to finish off my UFO list before starting too many new ones, this will have to wait. I currently have 9 of my small wall hangings sandwiched and ready to quilt. I also have a couple others that are sandwiched and waiting to be quilted. I'm determined to get them done. Don't think I'll get another done this month, but I'm certainly going to try.
I wish I could say the weather is keeping me inside because it's nasty outside, but we've been having the most gorgeous weather for this time of year. The calendar says winter, the weather says spring. I keep hoping for some rain as we need it desperately. Will be back when I finish a couple more. Till then, pray for rain!Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-26200558033864097662013-12-25T21:17:00.002-08:002013-12-25T21:17:30.976-08:00Christmas DayToday has been Christmas Day, all day long. It came without decorations, lights or presents. It came without all that fuss, without the hustle & bustle. And I think I like it this way. I had a very nice prime rib dinner with my husband and father-in-law, and 2 friends. I really thought about the reason for this whole holiday season. Yes, the Baby Jesus got gifts from the Wise Men. Perhaps they weren't the most useful to a child, but it was what they offered. In the song, "The Little Drummer Boy", the young boy has no gift, but offers to play his drum for the child, and then proceeds to do his best.

The Grinch thought that by stealing away the trees, the lights, the gifts, and the food that Christmas in Whoville wouldn't come. Yet his heart realized that when it came without all those things, that maybe, just maybe, he couldn't stop it. So maybe, just maybe, it's okay to celebrate without presents, trees, and lights. Maybe like the Grinch, I've developed a taste of I can do Christmas without all the fuss.

Don't get me wrong, I love the songs, the trees, the lights. I even enjoy getting a well thought out gift. But you know what, I didn't get a whole bunch of presents this year. I got only a couple small, well thought out gifts. That means more to me than presents just to make sure everyone on a list got one. So, maybe, just maybe, my heart, like the Grinch's, has grown over the years.

So, Merry Christmas to all and blessings upon you the whole year long.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7277713271131539764.post-41523188637077455122013-11-28T09:55:00.000-08:002013-11-28T09:55:09.831-08:00Thanksgiving DayToday is Thanksgiving Day. Many will watch the Macy's Parade from New York and usher in the Holiday Season. Some will still be homeless and try to find a free meal somewhere. Many will either travel or have traveled to see their loved ones. Some will travel to a spot to get away from it all.

I will spend it with family and friends. It's a time to be thankful for all we have and all we can do. My husband and I still have jobs and can still pay our bills. Our health is good - even if we could both stand to lose a few pounds (which of us couldn't?).

I have a four day weekend and plan to get some things done around the house. Little things but still it's something. I have to be ready for work on Monday so that will mean laundry and making sure I have enough in the fridge for lunches. But that's okay - makes my life seem normal.
I am no longer Worthy Matron of my Eastern Star chapter. Our new Worthy Matron was installed last night and I am thrilled with our choice. She is an awesome sister and will do a fantastic job. She has the privilege of presiding over our chapter for our 125th anniversary party.

Now I just have to get through the month of November with all the installations of new officers and I can kick back and relax. While I did take on a new job for my District, as Deputy Grand Matron, I can actually miss a meeting here and there. I will be able to take some quilt classes because I won't be planning a meeting. I might even get some of my UFOs finished. I still have my list going and will be whittling it away.

Today I am home and am doing the mundane things like laundry and putting out the recyclables and the trash. I'm not planning on any "big" things today. Just going to stay home and enjoy the quiet.

Am off to get a bit to eat and then start on those mundane things. Take care and enjoy your day.Cathrynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17713629422817635235noreply@blogger.com0
